For some couples, getting pregnant is quick and easy. For others, things may not go
exactly as planned.
Sometimes, problems are linked to specific physiological issues such as blocked fallopian
tubes in the woman or low or no sperm count in the man -- problems that can be helped
by fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or insemination.
For many others, however, reasons are much harder to define.
"Often, problems are subclinical -- meaning we know something is wrong, it's just not
showing up on the radar," says Staci Pollack, MD, a reproductive endocrinologist at
the Montefiore Medical Center's Institute of Reproductive Medicine and Health.
Many times experts say these couples are diagnosed as having "Unexplained Infertility " -
meaning, there likely is a constellation of small factors that come together to create big
barriers to conception.
Pollack says standard fertility treatments can usually help, but that in some cases,
so can a host of natural ways of getting pregnant -- which couples can try on their own.
The key to success: Knowing when to it's okay to keep trying on your own to get pregnant - and when it's time for more serious medical treatment.
So, how do you know? The American Society for Reproductive Medicine says if you don't get pregnant after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse -- or six months if you are a woman over 35 -- it's time to seek help from a fertility specialist
Do keep in mind, however, that the same tips that can help you get pregnant naturally can also help increase the success the any fertility treatments you may ultimately need, so it's never too early or too late to try them!
Natural Pregnancy Tip # 1: Eat Healthfully
Among the most common causes of unexplained infertility in women is
"ovulatory dysfunction" -- an umbrella term encompassing many problems linked
to ovulation. Though a number of factors can be responsible, many doctors
now believe diet is key. In a study of some 17,000 women conducted
by the Harvard School of Public Health, researchers were able to
define a group of "fertility foods" able to improve conception odds .
" These are foods we now know can have a significant impact on ovulation in
all women, and some of these foods can be particularly helpful if you are
diagnosed with endometriosis, PCOS ( poly cystic ovary syndrome)
or even fibroid tumors," says Dr. Niels Lauersen, director of
"Getting PregnantNow.org and author
of "The New Fertility Diet Guide." ( Ivy League Press, NY 2009).
Moreover Lauersen says that every woman can benefit from eating more "fertility foods" which, he says, can also increase energy and improve their overall health.
"The food plan featured in "The New Fertility Diet Guide" is based not only on the new research, but on a diet plan I have used to help thousands of patients get pregnant naturally throughout my 30 years of practice - I saw first hand how quickly these foods can turn a woman from infertile to fertile - particuarly if she and her partner are diagnosed with "unexplained infertility," says Lauersen.
Among the fertility foods Lauersen says work well includes high fiber snacks containing whole grains, certain vegetables and some fruits, plus foods high in omega 3 fatty acids, such as flaxseed and fish.
"It's not so much what you eat as the way in which you combine these foods that can give you the greatest benefits," he says.
Pollack believes it's worth giving the dietary approach a try but says , "You should not depend on it alone -- make it just one part of your overall efforts."
Natural Pregnancy Tip # 2: Control Your Weight
Being overweight or underweight can disrupt ovulation – the release of fertile eggs-
and play a major role in keeping you from getting pregnant.
Reporting in the journal Human Reproduction, researchers documented a 4%
decrease in conception odds for every point in Body Mass Index above 30.
For women whose BMI was higher than 35, there was up to a 43% overall
decrease in the ability to get pregnant.
At the same time, other studies have shown that being too thin can also impact
ovulation and keep you from getting pregnant. This is particularly true if
your menstrustrual cycle is already irregular – a sign that your weight may already
be interfering with your ability to get pregnant.
The good news: You don’t have to lose – or gain – a lot to see positive fertility results. In many instances as little as 10 pounds can make a huge difference in encouraging conception !
Natural Pregnancy Tip # 3: Hold Hands With Your Spouse!
As silly as that may sound, the key to getting pregnant can be stress reduction.
A study published in the journal Psychological Science found the simple act of
holding hands with your spouse can drop stress levels dramatically. So can
renting a stack of romantic comedy videos – or taking time out to read a book,
take a bath, do some yoga, start an herb garden, or anything you find is able
to reduce your stress.
How can that help you get pregnant faster? While doctors aren’t sure exactly
how or why, research continues to point to the destructive role of stress
hormones like cortisol on the reproductive hormones involved in the regulation of ovulation. In one encouraging study conducted by Alice Domar, PhD, at Harvard's Mind-Body Institute, women who underwent stress reduction therapy saw dramatic increases in their ability to get pregnant. In fact, even women who were already undergoing fertility treatments had more successful outcomes when stress was kept under control.
Natural Pregnancy Tip # 4: Moderate Exercise
While most women know that exercise is generally good for your health. But
what you may not realize is that too much exercise can actually disrupt your
fertility and make it harder to get pregnant. Traditionally, long distance runners
or sometimes even professional dancers can often suffer from irregular menstrual
cycles – and difficulty getting pregnant. If you are a workout over-achiever, cut down
to no more than 45 minutes three times a week while you are trying to get pregnant.
If you’re not exercising at all, adding in at least 20 minutes three times a week can
help keep cycles normal and encourage healthy, regular ovulation – which is one of
the best natural ways to enhance your fertility. Among the best workouts to enhance
your fertility: Simple yoga positions practiced for 20 minutes 3 to 5 times weekly.
Natural Pregnancy Tip # 5: Spend time in the sun!
The link to conception is Vitamin D!Because the body utilizes sunlight
to manufacture vitamin D, spending time in the sun can be a natural
fertility booster! indeed, studies show that couples who are deficient in
vitamin D can suffer from several related forms of infertility. Without
Vitamin D women can have a problem ovulating, while men may not
manufacture enough testoserone - the hormone necessary for sperm
production and maturation.
Need more evidence that sunlight can help you get pregnant?
Epidemiologic data shows that in countries where the latitude is the
&nnbsp; highest - meaning that sun exposure varies dramatically during the
year - conception rates were consistently higher in late summer,
which, not coincidentally, followed a season in the sun! Birth rates are
also the highest in spring - which means conception occured in the fall,
again, after a summer in the sun!
